X-Men First Class "Killing will not bring you peace"

Well finally X-Men First Class had its midnight premiere and boy was I excited but it was also the end of a long road. When they first announced they were doing X-Men First Class I was worried that it was going to be another crap pile like X3 The Last Stand. As time passed and a great cast and crew were put on board, this film started to gain some confidence. Then the reviews started to come in and I was relieved and excited to see the X-Men is top form. So did it meet my expectations? Was it worth the wait? Read my full review to find out!

X-Men First Class takes the story back to its origins before mutants were known in the public. Erik Lehnsherr, played by Michael Fassbender, is on a mission to avenge his mother and learn more about his magnetic powers every day. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), with childhood friend Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), join forces with the CIA to stop a rouge team of evil mutants from starting World War III. Erik and Charles meet up and join forces and recruit mutants from across the globe, but will they be able to stop the Hellfire Club? Will Charles be able to help Erik's rage before it gets the better of him? Read on...

The first highlight of this film was the amazing acting that came from McAvoy and Fassbender. McAvoy really shone as Charles Xavier and really captured the young Professor X with style and finesse. Fassbender was able to balance with him perfectly and really gave a wonderful performance of Erik. The reason why Fassbender was so impressive is that he was able to give a new side of Magneto, the emotional side. He helped form reasons that explain why Magneto turned away from Erik and does a damn good job at it. By the end of the film it becomes a good discussion to talk about who was right, Xavier or Erik? On one side Xavier does seem optimist but at every turn it seems some human is trying to wipe out the mutants. On the other side, even though Magneto does was to kill humans, his experience with the Holocaust, his mother, and recent events give some justifiable reasons for his actions. In the end, McAvoy and Fassbender made this film damn entertaining. Every scene between the two was emotionally gripping, powerfully acted, and never boring. These two actors made this film. Without them I am not as sure that I would have enjoyed it as much.

The other highlight that I really enjoyed about it was the 60s nostalgia with the film. I really liked seeing the clothes, cars, styles, and clips that came from that decade that added a realistic presence to the film. It was also a smart move to play the USA vs Russia card that reflects the Humans vs Mutants conflict as well. It was very nostalgic and added a lot of to the film.

The supporting cast also did a pretty darn good job except for a few minor bumps. Jennifer Lawrence wasn't my favorite but for that I will blame the script, she did however did add nice addition to the "i feel different" theme that plays very strongly into the X-Men stories. Kevin Bacon surprised me and was awesome as Sebastian Shaw, he pulled his unique classy style with some nice evil villainy. Hoult was actually surprisingly good as Beast and was able to catch the obsessive nature that Hank McCoy has over the mutant gene. I was pleased for the film to cover the controversial issue of conformity versus individuality. In McCoy's case, when you conform, you actually may actually end up worse than when you started. All the villains in the Hellfire Club were strong, and the allies in the first X-Men group did not disappoint. Overall its a great film to see a bunch of your favorite X-Men in cameos spread all over the place. Plus there are a lot of comic references that fans will be able to catch on to.

A few last things. Vaughen once again is able to direct a great comic book movie that both is unique and devoted to the material. He is one of the best on the block when it comes to comic book movies. Also watch out for some sick action sequences and great special effects. Never did anything look fake or made it, it seemed very realistic. I know that may sound stupid but there are plenty of films whose CGI is blantly bad that its nice to see great CGI like this one.

Overall this was a fun and great film. Some awesome acting and a great storyline to boot. It was surprising how much they fit into one movie but it never felt like too much and it was enjoyable to see them do it. There are some awesome cameos and one that was hilarious and I would hate to ruin it for anyone. Go see it and enjoy the hell out of it! 4 out of 5 stars
